The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University has been closed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. The museum will finally be reopening on September 1st and will be launching a new exhibit on activist and scholar Angela Davis.

The new exhibit “Angela Davis – Seize the Time” will open on September 8th. “Seize the Time” focuses on Davis and her image, particularly her representation as a political prisoner following her arrest in 1969 and her subsequent acquittal. The show also looks at Davis’ influence on contemporary artists such as Coco Fusco and Sadie Barnette who reference her work on revolution, feminisms, and incarceration.

The show is based on the holdings of a private archive in Oakland, California, collected and curated by Lisbet Tellefsen. Included in the exhibit are materials related to the campaign to free Angela, press photography, posters, videos, music, court sketches, and more.

“Angela Davis — Seize the Time” will run through June 15. The Zimmerli Museum will be open  11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays starting September 1st.
